Free and Low-Cost Kids Activities on the Main Line

2026-04-08 ยท Main Line Activities

#main-line#free#library#nature#accessible#budget

Quality kids activities don't have to cost money. The best free and low-cost programs for families across the Main Line: libraries, nature trails, museum programs, and more.

The Main Line has a reputation as an expensive place, and a lot of kids programming here is priced accordingly. But there's a parallel ecosystem of free and genuinely low-cost activities that doesn't get nearly enough attention. Libraries with excellent programming. Nature organizations with drop-in programs. Community art centers that deliberately provide free access. Outdoor spaces that don't cost anything to use.

This guide is for families who are either working with a tight budget or just want to fill mornings without spending money every time. Every program listed here is either free or costs less than $20 per session.

Library Programs โ€” The Most Underrated Free Resource

The Main Line's public library system is exceptional for children's programming. Most story times, STEM clubs, and library events are free and require either no registration or simple online sign-up.

Wayne Public Library runs the most comprehensive free kids programming of any Main Line branch. Their weekly story times, including Itsy Bitsy Story Time for babies and toddlers, Story Time for 2s, and Story Time for 3s/4s/5s, are among the most popular programs in Wayne. But the library's calendar goes well beyond story time: LEGO Lab, Math Fun with Arin, a Baby-Sitters Club Fan Club for tweens, Early Readers Book Club, and Free Play Fridays in the children's room (an open-ended play session with the library's toys and materials). Nearly everything at Wayne Public Library is free.

Free Play at Libraries and Community Spaces

Beyond structured programming, several Main Line spaces offer low-key free play options:

  • Wayne Public Library Free Play Fridays: Open-ended play in the children's room with the library's full toy and materials collection. Drop-in, no registration.
  • Haverford College Arboretum: Free to walk any time. The 216-acre arboretum grounds are beautiful year-round and a genuine natural space for children to explore.
  • Valley Forge National Historical Park: A short drive from the Main Line, Valley Forge is free to enter and offers miles of trails, open meadows, and a Junior Ranger program for kids.

Notes on "Free"

A few of these programs are technically free but may have incidental costs (art supplies, parking). Always check the program details. Library programs are usually truly free. Township park programs vary: some require a registration fee for the season's programming even when individual sessions are free to drop in.

Financial assistance is also available for many paid programs on the Main Line. Main Line Art Center, Wayne Art Center, the YMCA, and several township recreation departments offer scholarships or reduced-rate spots. Always ask. The answer is often yes.
